HOW TO BECOME A CATALOGUE MODEL.

picture: Ajak Deng

WHAT IS CATALOGUE MODELLING?

For many people who fail to understand, there are different aspects of modeling that prospective models can opt for.
There are a number of different designers who release their own catalogues of all of their designs as the season changes, and for these purposes, a catalogue model is used to adorn all of those dresses and model for the designer. These pictures are compiled and a proper catalogue is created, and these books are sold to the general public then at various book stores and places.

Being a catalogue model means that you are experienced in the modeling profession and are able to pose in a good manner so as to get more recognition from different fashion houses, A catalogue model might also get to model for a standard fashion show as well, so it does not make a difference as to whether they wish to appear in catalogues or if they wish to appear on the ramp. If you wish to become a catalogue model, the first thing that you must do is get a picture portfolio created and then send it over to several demonstrating agencies for selection purposes.

Once you get selected and your pictures are liked by the judges, there are chances that you will quickly get hired and pose for a catalogue or a calendar depending on your choice and talents.

steps to be a catalogue model:
1. need a fit and toned body with clear skin and good teeth.
2. Measure yourself often. You need to know your exact measurements as casting directors and others will ask you for them quite often
3.Experiment with lots of clothes. Do this to see what looks good on you. Get to know how you look in photos and posed in various ways. Have some photos taken by a professional photographer.
4.Find agents to send your photos to. Send a zed card and cover sheet to each one.
5.Watch fashion shows. This will allow you to see the standards of modeling and may acquire you some handy hints.

TIPS:
  • You don't always need a pretty face but you need a clear face.
  • Come to photo shoots a bit earlier than what has been requested of you.
  • Adopt a good, professional attitude.
  • Never put a picture up of you more than a week ago or less.
  • Remember to relax, and keep an open mind.

AFRICA TOP MODELS - LIYA KEBEDE

Today we are adoring the amazing Ethopian-born Liya Kebede (who I have adored for years). She has a startling beauty that makes her a runway and editorial favourite, and a great passion for giving back to the community where she grew up.

If you haven’t heard of the label ‘Lemlem’, it was launched by Liya Kebede in 2008. Here is an excerpt from the About page of the brand website www.lemlem.com:

Supermodel / actress and former World Health Organisation’s Goodwill Ambassador for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, Liya Kebede discovered that traditional weavers in her native country of Ethiopia were losing their jobs due to a decline in local demand for their goods and wanted to do something about it. Recognizing the beauty, quality and historic significance of their work, Liya started Lemlem in 2007 as a way to inspire economic independence in her native country and to preserve the art of weaving

Liya Kebede now aged 34 is an Ethiopian model, maternal health advocate, clothing designer and actress who has appeared three times on the cover of US Vogue. According to Forbes, Kebede was the eleventh-highest-paid top model in the world in 2007

    ABOUT BLACKFOX PHOTO CLUB

Our mission is to promote interest in and appreciation for the art of photography.

There are many people in Tanzania who would like to grow their photographic skills and there seem to be lacking an organisation of that nature. Members’ skill levels range from beginner to advanced, amateur to professional. Their areas of interest include portraiture, nature, landscape, street and sports and even fashion photography.

Monthly meetings enable members to share their knowledge and are dedicated to the improvement of photographic technique and vision. The meetings consist of a short business session and a quarterly competition followed by a program on one aspect of photography. The presentation may be a critique of member photographs, a skilled amateur or professional speaker, a workshop or a general discussion of photography. Periodically, field trips are organized to further encourage the photographic experience.

Several exhibits of members’ works are held each year. Every show is judged by a professional photographer, and awards are given for Best in Show, First Place, Second Place and Honorable Mention. Club members’work will also exhibited at art venues throughout the region.

Membership is open to anyone with an interest in photography residing in Dar es salaam Tanzania.

AFRICA'S TOP MODELS - Nyasha Matonhodze

Originally from Zimbabwe, and being represented by Elite Model management in London.
Nyasha was raised by her single mom whom she says is her inspiration as she has been so succesful after facing so many challenges in her life. She was a tall child and by the age of 12 people were advising her to go into modelling, and she did exactly that three years ago. She walked into a modelling agency and signed in.

Nyasha auditioned and competed in Cycle 10 of the Next Top Modal the very popular modeling reality television contest, and has since that time, gradually built her way up to the top.
“I find it difficult to see myself and think that I’m a model. I feel blessed and honoured to keep getting that next step in my career. I’ve met amazing people that keep supporting me and pushing me further and further. It’s like a dream, no matter how good I do; it’s still so surreal for me,” she tells the New York Magazine.

She’s also walked for names like Loewe, Jonathan Saunders, Emanuel Ungaro, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen, Burberry, MaxMara, DKNY, Carolina Herrera and Michael Kors among a tall, enviable list.
Already she’s shot over 90 campaigns, 80 of which were shot in the last year. Matonhodze has certainly got her grind on, and wouldn’t be long that she will make it into a list of the world’s top models. Considering what she’s achieved so far, that shouldn’t be hard to achieve.

All the best to Nyasha and I hope that she will continue to make waves in the modelling scene!

    Fashion Photography Tips for Photographers!

Fashion photography is more of showing aesthetics and beauty of trendy clothing, accessories and others. It is usually used for commercial purposes. These are the elegant pictures of men and women that we see wearing fabulous clothing and great makeup. These are placed in brochures, magazines, billboards, websites, televisions and others. You can see a handful of fashion photography everywhere and for sure you were impressed on how these are done.
If you are into photography and you would like to try fashion photography, then we could help you with the basic tips below.

    1. Look for inspiration.

    image: koukei

There are so many fashion photos that one can see on magazines, billboards, posters, websites and many others. You can look into these and learn from it. Be observant on what these fashion photos look and what makes them unique. Look into their style, lighting, framing, clothing, color choices and others. This way, you will have an idea on what to do with your fashion photo.

    2.Be prepared with ideas.

    image: jazz your soul

It is important that before the photo shoot, you already know what to do and what you like. So, before the photo shoot, sit down and brainstorm. Think of what you want and what you need. Then speak with your team and brainstorm with them, too. This is the key for successful fashion photography. You should know everything beforehand. That would include the kind of models you need, the clothes you need, the location, the props, and even the angles of how the images can be taken.

    3.Light and shadows.

    image: silent order

In fashion photography, light doesn’t have to be complicated. But you can experiment with the lighting and shadows in order to get the shot you want. See to it that you look into where the shadow will cast in a way that it will not distract the image and the model as well. Observe what is good for your shot if we speak about light and shadows. It would also vary if you do it outdoor or indoors

    4.Choose a good location.

    image: hakan photography

Your location would depend on the style, motif and concept of your fashion photography. You can actually try any location. It would look good as long as your model could play the role well. If you want brighter areas, you can opt for open places like parks or even tourist spots. For darker photos, you may try stairwells, alleys, tunnels and others. But you can always have a photo shoot in your own studio.

    5.Choose your models well.

    image: kurakuraku

If you want to have a great output, you need to get the right model. Do not just pick a model because that one is available. Asses your models well and try to look into how they appear both in the photos and in person. You have to make sure that your model looks right for the kind of fashion photography you will have.
